Brush Hogging vs. Mowing

What’s the difference, and which one does your Oklahoma property actually need?

BRUSH HOGGING VS. PASTURE MOWING

They’re Similar — But Not The Same

If you own acreage in Oklahoma, you’ve probably heard the terms mowing, pasture mowing, brush hogging and bush hogging used almost interchangeably.

While they’re closely related, they aren’t always the same job.

Mowing maintains land. Brush hogging takes land back.

The right choice usually depends on how overgrown the property is, what type of vegetation is present, and what you want the finished property to look like.

ROUTINE LAND MAINTENANCE

What Is Pasture Mowing?

Pasture mowing is typically used on land that is already being maintained.

The goal isn’t to make a pasture look like a residential lawn. It’s about keeping grass, weeds and unwanted growth at a manageable height while keeping the property usable and accessible.

Pasture mowing is ideal for:

  • Maintained pastures
  • Horse and livestock properties
  • Open acreage
  • Fields with grass and weeds
  • Seasonal maintenance
  • Recurring acreage mowing

HEAVIER OVERGROWTH

What Is Brush Hogging?

Brush hogging is the heavier-duty side of tractor mowing.

A brush hog, or rotary cutter, is designed for rough vegetation where a regular mower isn’t the right tool. It can handle tall grass, heavy weeds, briars and appropriate light woody growth.

Brush hogging is ideal for:

  • Heavily overgrown acreage
  • Neglected fields
  • Tall grass and weeds
  • Briars and light brush
  • Rough pasture
  • Hunting properties
  • Field edges and access areas

THE SIMPLE DIFFERENCE

Maintain It Or Reclaim It

If you have an open pasture that simply needs its annual or seasonal cut, you’re probably looking for pasture mowing.

If you have acreage that hasn’t been touched in years and is covered in tall weeds, briars and heavy growth, you’re probably looking for brush hogging.

Sometimes a property needs both. The first heavy cut gets it back under control, then regular mowing keeps it that way.

KNOW THE LIMITS

Brush Hogging Isn’t Land Clearing

Brush hogging can make an overgrown property look dramatically different, but it doesn’t remove established stumps, large trees or root systems like true land-clearing equipment.

Think of it as reclaiming the surface of an open property rather than completely clearing the land.

If a property has become heavily wooded or contains substantial woody growth, different equipment may be required.
